Magnetic tape is a long, thin strip of plastic coated with a thin layer of magnetic material. The tape is wound onto reels, sometimes inside a cartridge. Tape is read and written on a tape drive that winds the tape from one reel to the other, causing it to pass a read/write head. Tape can store large quantities of data inexpensively and is often used as a backup medium.
